Moros Protocol, developed by Pixel Reign and published by Super Rare Originals, is a sci-fi FPS roguelite arriving on PlayStation 5 on October 1, 2026, after having launched on PC via Steam and GOG in September 2025.
The game places players aboard the Orpheus, a derelict capital warship lost in deep space and overrun by the Darkphage infestation. You awaken with no memory, armed mainly with instinct and guided by an enigmatic voice, fighting through blood-soaked, shifting corridors in a brutal struggle for survival and answers.
The plot in Moros Protocol centers around an amnesiac protagonist named Alex who finds himself exploring the corrupted ship to uncover what happened to the crew and confront the spreading horror. It unfolds across segmented areas with a mystery that reveals itself gradually through progression, environmental storytelling, character interactions, and boss encounters, while death activates the titular Moros Protocol to transfer consciousness into a new body for another attempt.
The Gameplay ...
Gameplay blends classic boomer shooter combat with roguelite structure and challenging boss fights. Combat in the game is tactical yet fast-paced and adaptable. Players equip a melee weapon plus up to two ranged weapons, use kicks to launch objects or enemies, and rely on dodging, learning enemy patterns, and resource management. Rooms often lock upon entry until cleared, turning encounters into tense arenas. Exploration yields hidden chests, secrets, ammo, health, and upgrades, while vendors offer purchases with credits. Features include drop-in cooperative play for two players, allowing shared progression through the full experience.
Mechanics focus on loadout customization through found weapons and augments that shape playstyles, from cautious and tactical to aggressive and melee-focused, while permanent progression occurs via a BioBoost upgrade system. The roguelike progression mixes handcrafted environments with procedural generation for new layouts, enemy placements, and challenges each run. Death resets the current attempt but retains knowledge and upgrades, encouraging adaptation and pushing further. To heal along the way you must collect blue orbs drop from killed Darkphage creatures that fill up your health syringe. Objectives, in-game, revolve around clearing stages within three main areas and multiple stages, locating teleporters to advance, defeating bosses to unlock further sections of the ship, discovering secrets, and ultimately overcoming the infestation while surviving the escalating threats.
The Presentation ...
Presentation uses a unique 3D graphic design with pixel rich skins pasted on top. Something that is both modern and retro, visually. Ultimately creating a neon soaked atmosphere with an added sci-fi horror feel. The visual design supports tense exploration and chaotic combat, effectively. The soundtrack, composed by Vicky Fysika, features a mix of electronic textures, ambient drones, metal and goth influences, drum & bass energy, and memorable melodic themes.
The Verdict ...
Moros Protocol features satisfying gunplay and melee combat, tense room-clearing battles, and demanding boss fights that reward skill and adaptation. Replay value is good thanks to procedural layouts, variable loadouts and augments, permanent upgrades, co-op differences, run modifiers, secrets, and the inherent loop of a roguelite. On the price front, as an indie title it offers solid value for the content, post-launch updates, and dual solo/co-op modes.
I feel it is an experience best suited for players who enjoy retro-inspired FPS combat or boomer shooters, roguelite progression with procedural variety, challenging boss encounters, and atmospheric sci-fi horror, especially gamers who enjoy rocking their roguelites solo or in friendly company.
